From IRAP to SSnWFT (a heretical idea to fix precariat)
2018
The paper – after addressing the issue of flexicurity as a lens through which to see precariousness, after identifying the sources at ILO, EU and constitutional level as foundation of `incompressibility' of rights which guarantee decent work against lacking of security in precariousness – proposes to consider the lacking of security produced by precariat as a degree of participation of flexibility for firms as `social pollution' i.e. as generator of negative externalities. One proposes a fully change of paradigm to fight and to tackle the lacking in security at precariat level with a solution in terms of internalisation of externalities (i.e social costs); - rather then affecting precarious…
Precarious workers' choices about unemployment insurance membership after the Ghent system reform : The Finnish experience
2019
The literature on the Ghent system has focused on the link between voluntary unemployment insurance and union membership in terms of industrial relations. Less attention has been paid to unemployment benefits and employees' decision-making concerning unemployment insurance, even though the core function of the Ghent system is to provide unemployment insurance. This paper examines both of the options that precarious workers (i.e., part-timers, temporary employees, and low-skilled service employees) choose regarding unemployment insurance membership and the change in union density after the Ghent system reform in Finland. First, the results show that the growth of the independent unemployment…
This paper takes into account that part-time contracts work are a good instrument that allows greater freedom to configure t…
Precarious work and social protection: between flexicurity and social pollution
2019
The chapter explores the possibility of changing the way in which any social and legal system guarantees social protections for the weakest workers. To do so it elaborates a unique functional set for classifying all kind of precariat, which it names the ‘un[der]-protected workers’. The issue of the precariat is held as an imbalance in the flexicurity balance, considered akin to pollution in the social environment: so-called social pollution. The proposed method to counterbalance the lack of security/protection and rebalance flexicurity is a ‘(non-wage) Social Security (virtual or) Fake (Pigouvian) Tax’ (the SSFT). The idea is that this device either forces companies to hire through SERs (wh…
2019
The project-based organization, considered as a radical reorganization of work around one or more simultaneous projects, is nowadays widespread in large companies and public administrations. According to the managerial way of thinking, this system would be virtuous: by giving more autonomy to the employees in the act of production and by developing their skills through mobility and interdisciplinarity of work teams, it would be able to arouse their full commitment. This study confirms in some way how this opinion has been imposed, but at the expense of precarious working conditions, increasing the dedication of employees and silencing any form of criticism. The research is based on a review…
Balamane: Variations on a Noisy Ground
2020
This contribution concentrates on a discussion of four conceptual keywords – Helmut, Sunglasses, Water, Language – which we explore as semiotic variations on a ground. This approach to the contradictory everyday realities of the touristic setting in Mallorca is the result of our (self-)critical reflections on how to write about language, migration, encounters, the normal and the liminal in the party tourism spot – and on how to give a (personal) insight into the world of contradictions at the Ballermann. We are considerably grateful to our research colleagues Angelika Mietzner and Janine Traber, with whom we have been working on the complex entanglements of tourism and migration since 2016 …
